The Isolation Journals - Day 69

Prompt:  Reflect on a cause or issue that’s been on your mind. Ask yourself: What’s my story—what does this issue mean to me? What expertise or perspective do I bring? Then write a letter to the editor.

---

Dear Editor,

I'm willing to bet that you and most everyone reading reading this letter possess at least a high school education.  Your community invested in you when you were young, and now you are a literate person with the disposable income for a newspaper and the leisure time in which to read it.  That's a broad assumption, but generally speaking, it will hold true.

Can you picture your life without that education?  Without teachers and programs that made you feel connected, motivated, and inspired?  True, some people thrive in spite of a glaring lack of those assets, but most people thrive because of access to a quality education.

As our nation confronts the ugly truth of police brutality and over-policing, many activists and politicians are calling to defund police forces and invest that money elsewhere in our communities.  I want to express my support for this, so long as a significant portion of that funding is reallocated towards our public schools.  The surest way to sever the school-to-prison pipeline, build a strong community, and open doors of opportunity for young people is to invest in our schools.

Thank you,

KW
